SEO for Contractors: A Local SEO Playbook for GTA Trades
Most contractors don't need more website traffic. They need the phone to ring with the right jobs, in the areas they actually work. SEO for contractors is how you get there: showing up in Google Maps and local searches when someone needs a plumber, an electrician, a roofer or a concrete crew, and making it easy for them to call you.
This playbook covers what works for trades and contractors in Peel, Halton and across the GTA. First the basics every trade needs, then what changes for each one. It won't promise rankings. Nobody honestly can. But it shows you where the calls are leaking.

Why SEO works differently for contractors
A contractor isn't a shop with a front door. You go to the customer. That changes how local SEO works. Google treats most trades as service-area businesses: you can hide your street address and list the towns and neighbourhoods you serve instead. Ranking in the Map Pack still depends heavily on distance, relevance and how strong your profile is.
Contractor searches are also more urgent than most. "Burst pipe," "no power" and "roof leak" searches happen at night and on weekends, and the person searching usually calls the first listing that looks trustworthy. If nobody answers, they call the next one. So for contractors, SEO and answering the phone are the same problem.
Local SEO for contractors: the five basics
• A complete Google Business Profile. Pick the most specific primary category for your trade, add every service you offer, set real service areas and hours, and upload photos of real jobs, not stock images.
• One page per main service. A roofer needs separate pages for repairs, replacements and inspections, not one "services" page. Each page should name the service and the area it covers.
• The same name, address and phone number everywhere. Your site, your profile and every directory listing should match exactly.
• A steady flow of genuine reviews. Ask after every finished job, make it one tap, and reply to every review, good or bad.
• A phone line that converts. A visible call button on every page, call tracking, and a text-back when you miss a call, so a 9 p.m. search still becomes a booked job.
SEO for plumbers
Plumbing is mostly urgent search: a burst pipe, a clogged drain, no hot water. Build separate pages for emergency plumbing, drains, water heaters and fixture installs, and make sure your Google Business Profile hours match when you actually pick up. If you offer after-hours service, say so clearly, and have a plan for the calls you can't answer. A missed emergency call is almost always a lost job.
SEO for electricians
Electrical searches split into urgent ("no power," "breaker keeps tripping") and planned work (panel upgrades, EV chargers, renovations, pot lights). Give each its own page. In Ontario, customers increasingly look for a licensed electrical contractor, so show your ECRA/ESA licence number on your site and your profile. It builds trust with people, and it makes it clear to search engines what you are.
SEO for roofing contractors
Roofing demand spikes after storms and before winter. Separate pages for roof repair, replacement, inspections and flat roofing help you match what people actually search. Photos of real local jobs do more than anything else on a roofing profile, and reviews that mention the type of job ("replaced our shingles in two days") help both customers and Google understand what you do.
SEO for concrete and foundation contractors
Concrete and foundation work is high-ticket and planned, so customers compare. Pages for driveways, walkways, foundation repair, waterproofing and insulation, each with photos and a clear "what happens next," give people a reason to call you rather than fill in five quote forms. Local SEO for foundation and insulation contractors works the same way: name the service, name the area, show the work.
Local SEO for demolition and excavation contractors
Demolition and excavation customers are often other contractors, builders and property owners with a deadline. They search by service and area, and they call whoever looks equipped and available. List your equipment and the job sizes you take on, set realistic service areas, and keep your Google Business Profile hours and phone number accurate. These categories are often less crowded online, so the basics done well can go a long way.
SEO for general contractors and renovators
General contractors have the widest service list and the hardest time ranking for all of it. Pick the work you most want more of (kitchens, basements, additions, commercial fit-outs) and build a strong page for each, with real project photos. A clear process page ("how a renovation with us works") answers the questions people have before they call.
SEO for landscapers
Landscaping search is seasonal. People search for spring cleanups, design and maintenance contracts, then snow removal. Update your Google Business Profile services and posts as the season turns, and build pages for the work you want in each season. Before-and-after photos are the best proof a landscaper can publish.
SEO for home service contractors
The same playbook works for painters, pest control, cleaners, HVAC contractors, garage door and window companies, and other home service trades. Pick a specific primary category, build a page for each main service, ask for reviews after every job and answer every call, or text back fast when you can't. Seasonal trades should plan their Google Business Profile posts and service pages ahead of the busy months, not during them.
How long SEO takes for contractors
Honest range: early Map Pack and listing movement often shows in about 30 to 90 days once your Google Business Profile, NAP and service pages are clean. Stronger organic results usually take 3 to 6 months or more, and longer in crowded trades and big cities. Anyone who guarantees a #1 ranking is guessing.
Should you hire an SEO company for contractors?
You can do the basics yourself, and this playbook is enough to start. Hire help when you'd rather be on the tools, or when the basics are done and you've stalled. When you compare SEO companies, look for published prices, no ranking guarantees, reporting in calls rather than traffic, month-to-month terms, and accounts that stay in your name.

FAQ
What is SEO for contractors?
SEO for contractors is the work that gets a trade business found when nearby customers search for its services: in the Google Map Pack, in regular search results and in AI answers. It covers your Google Business Profile, service pages, reviews and directory listings, and for Keelroom it also covers turning that visibility into answered calls.
Can I have a Google Business Profile without an address?
Yes. Most contractors can set up their Google Business Profile as a service-area business, hide the street address and list the areas they serve instead. You still need a real business location to verify the profile. Don't use a virtual office or a P.O. box, which can get a profile suspended.
Why did my Google Business Profile disappear?
Common causes are a suspension for a guideline issue, a lost verification after a big edit like a name or address change, a duplicate listing, or a filter that hides similar businesses near each other. Check your profile dashboard for a notice first. If it's suspended, fix the cause before you ask Google for reinstatement.
How do I get more reviews on my Google Business Profile?
Reviews are on automatically once your profile is verified. Ask every happy customer right after the job, send your direct review link by text so it's one tap, and reply to every review. Don't offer rewards or buy reviews. Google removes them and can penalize the profile.
How long does SEO take for contractors?
Early Map Pack and listing movement often shows in about 30 to 90 days once your Google Business Profile, NAP and service pages are clean. Stronger organic results usually take 3 to 6 months or more. No one can honestly guarantee a ranking.
Does setting service areas affect local rankings?
Service areas tell Google where you work, but they don't override distance. Ranking still depends a lot on where the searcher is, how relevant you are and how strong your profile is. List only the areas you actually serve, and back the main ones up with real pages on your site.
How much does SEO for contractors cost with Keelroom?
Keelroom publishes its prices. Presence OS is Foundation at $499, Growth at $997 or Dominate at $1,497 CAD a month, all month-to-month with no long contracts.
Results vary by trade, area and competition. Keelroom does not guarantee rankings or call volume.
